Benton County Circuit Court Details

The Benton County Circuit Court is the 21st Judicial District in Oregon. Three elected judges serve the court. They are Judge Joan E. Demarest, Judge Matthew J. Donohue, and Judge Keri J. Smith. Each serves a six-year term. The court resolves disputes under the law and processes legal transactions for all of Benton County.

The Benton County Courthouse stands on land donated by Joseph and Martha Avery and William and Julia Dixon. These families co-founded the town first known as Marysville, later renamed Corvallis. Portland architect Delos D. Neer designed the courthouse in Italianate style. Construction took place from 1888 to 1889, and the total cost was less than $70,000. Judge R.S. Bean presided over the first court session in the new building on November 4, 1889. The Benton County Courthouse was designated an Oregon Historic Site in 1968.
